Omaha is just as Texas Holde’m a community card game with the objective in to make the winning five hand combination out of a number of hole cards and the board. However players used to Texas Holdem rules should note the following two differences: Four hole cards are dealt to each player
- And very important to remember: exactly two hole cards should be used to make up the winning five-hand combination. So if you have: If you have AAKJ and the board is 4,5,6,7,8 you beat a player having A9. The number of seats available at an Omaha table online usually is for nine or ten and the limits played are mostly Fixed or in some cases Pot Limit.
Starting a new hand – Blind Posting
The new hand starts with the posting of blinds. The responsibility to post the blinds rotates round the table at the two positions left to the dealers. The small blind posted by the player directly to the left of the dealer button (usually half the value of a small bet but sometimes) and the big blind (the value of the big bet). In $2-$4 Omaha the small blind is $1 and the big blind $2.
Cards are dealt
Each Player participating in the hand receives four hole cards (pocket cards). Since you must use exactly two of the pocket cards to make your hand you can now decide how to continue. For instance if your pocket cards are four deuces you are not in a very good hand here. You can choose to call, raise, reraise or fold. If you are in the big blind it is also possible to check (if nobody has raised).
The Flop
When all the betting is done in this round referred to as the ‘Pre Flop’ round the flop is dealt. Three cards are dealt from the deck and placed on the middle of the table. Together with your pocket cards that makes seven cards and you will now have a good indication whether or not you have a good hand. Depending on the flop you can again choose to: check, call, raise, reraise or fold
During the two first rounds bets are made according to the small bet in limit games; the next two round the bets will increase to the big bet.
The turn
A fourth card is added to the board called the turn. Again players may check, call, fold, bet, raise and reraise depending on the action in the betting round.
The river
The fifth and last card, the river is added to the board and the final betting round takes place. Again players may check, call, fold, bet, raise and reraise depending on the action in the betting round.
Showdown
If more than one player is left after the last betting round a showdown takes place where the remaining players show their cards. The winning five hand combination (2 holecards + three cards on the board) player or players will win the pot. The most popular form of Omaha is Omaha 8oB or Omaha Hi/Lo split where the Pot can be split between the high hand and a hand qualifying for low.
